I don't know if you have been made aware as it has only recently been made common knowledge however I know David holds you in very high regard so I thought I would email you our sad news.
Life for David and I has taken a bitter and twisted turn. David has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. It has been a whirlwind from blissful ignorance to the devastating diagnosis on 1st May. The disease has already captured his legs and he is forced to use a wheelchair and his arms now lack any definition. Yet still he remains the enigmatic force of nature he has always been. His bravery and acceptance is awe inspiring and as always I am so very proud of him.
We are having a big family only day with children and grandchildren on the 20th to make a mega memory which will be fantastic. All we need now is the local council to organise an extension, so a wet room and bedroom can be created on the ground floor of our little house and life will be bearable.
He's keeping cheerful and messages from his old colleagues and friends have been multitudinous and greatly received. I am of course chief nurse, chef, receptionist/PA, driver, dog wrangler and breaker of bad news. But it's almost a privilege to be Davids arms and legs when his cheerfulness knows no bounds. He could have three months or 10 years or anything in between so our future is uncertain. So every day is another opportunity to make a memory and we're grateful for it. Janaya our eldest daughter and Eric her husband are over from America and although Eric has to return in a week Janaya is staying for a month.
Having said all that I apologise for being the bearer of such news and thank you for being such a great colleague and friend to David over the years - he and I appreciate it. Please share this news with those colleagues with whom David has worked and enjoyed continual and unadulterated banter over the years and assure them that until he is unable, the stories continue! Very kind regards to you all.
